Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or myeloencphalitis (ME) is a complex, long-term disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that can’t be explained by any other specific medical condition – the fatigue is chronic and can be set off even by normal to low activity.
While the exact cause of ME/CFS or myeloencphalitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome is not fully understood, the symptoms are debilitating and can make daily life feel like an uphill battle.
Symptoms of ME/CFS
- memory loss
- trouble concentrating
- sore throat
- enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
- unexplained muscle or joint pain
- trouble sleeping
- extreme tiredness even while resting or following light movement
Causes of ME/CFS
As for what triggers this condition, most practitioners believe that stress to the body, including chronic issues such as “adrenal fatigue” (Hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction) or “leaky gut syndrome” are most common. A poor diet, a dormant infection (such as Lyme disease, co-infections, EBV, CMV, or others), hormone imbalances, or exposure to heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other environmental toxins are other potential triggers for chronic fatigue.
According to an Institute of Medicine (IOM), an estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million Americans suffer from ME/CFS. Still, most of them have not been diagnosed, and the numbers are growing, affecting men, women, and children of all races and ethnicities.
